Slovene Ethnographic Museum. 100 years
The year 2023 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Slovene Ethnographic Museum (SEM), the oldest ethnological institution in Slovenia.
The SEM is a “museum about people, for people”, a treasure trove of Slovenian and non-European heritage. As a modern, living and open museum, it co-creates the cultural vibe of the Slovenian capital and the Metelkova Museum platform.
The origins of today's Museum are linked to the Provincial Museum of Carniola, where the first ethnographic collections began to be created, both Slovenian collections and those from continents beyond Europe. The richness of the SEM lies in the collections and objects that the curators have been collecting, preserving, studying and presenting in the independent museum since 1923. The collections date mainly from the 19th century to the present day.
We are presenting only a fraction of this heritage with twenty selected objects in photographs by Tomo Jeseničnik, which tell stories about people, places, culture and ways of life in the Museum's exhibitions.
The Museum's festive year operates under the slogan 100 Years of the SEM: Let's Celebrate Together! and brings a varied programme of events and exhibitions. We invite you to visit us, and look forward to meeting you!
