Weaving atelier

The weaving atelier offers a live museum activity. Hand-weaving is one of the oldest crafts in Slovenia and was still essential during the 18th and the first half of the 19th century when almost every household still had a weaving loom. Today, only a small number of weavers, as well as lovers devote themselves to hand-weaving since it was replaced by the cheaper industrial textile manufacturing.

The SEM weaving atelier is the working and sales space of weavers Mojca Tomšič and Barbara Lapuh, graduates of Textile Technology and Engineering. Although hand-weaving has been an important part of their lives for more than thirty years, their enthusiasm for the endless possibilities of creating with colours, different materials and patterns has not been exhausted. While both of them have created their own style of weaving – their products are unique handmade pieces certified by the Chamber of Craft of Slovenia – they also reach for traditional patterns from the past. They create unique products such as scarves, bags, wallets, blankets, caps, jackets etc. Visitors to the atelier can also buy all of these products or have them custom-made.

They share the technique of hand weaving with their visitors who can also try out weaving themselves. If previously agreed, the weavers mostly run individual courses for adults and children.
