The body as the factor in the formation of social space
The article is based on an empirical research of kinship in Dogoše, a village in the close vicinity of Maribor. The author presents how women created their social space based on the movements of different types of capital, with special emphasis on the social capital represented by kinship networks. Due to the major role of women in marriage strategies, which tended to preserve the property structure of the village and the reproduction of the workforce, women’s social capital was often limited to their body and its reproductive capacity. The body is thus presented as the entity which develops in the mutual operation of different social factors, and which has a decisive role in the creation and preservation of social inequality.
