The body in the age of HIV/AIDS, with special emphasis on Botswana

Based on her fieldwork in a NGO fighting HIV/AIDS in Botswana and consulted literature, the article presents certain perceptions of the HIV/AIDS issue and bodiness in Botswana. Because the infection rate in this country is very high, the disease permeates all spheres of life and the entire society. It is therefore necessary to re-examine the present perception of the disease and its consequences to society, because it is an issue that interferes with the most intimate human relations – sexuality, love, reproduction, and the body. Beside the physical phenomenology of the disease, a great number of social factors play a role - stereotyped opinions, prejudices, different perceptions, and apologetics for the disease.
