From lyre to barrel-organ

The various types of barrel organs which became extinct in Europe and Slovenia in the early 20th century derived from the ancient Greek lyre, from the medieval organistrum, from Drehleier and Drehorgel and numerous other related instruments. The instrument's history covers a span of over two thousand years and ends with its development into an automatic organ and into the predecessor of the modern computer.

The article is an enlarged version of a paper presented at the Symposium Slovenski glasbeni dnevi / Slowenische Musiktage, held in Ljubljana in 1994, dedicated to the theme "Music in a technical world - Musica ex Machina" and entitled "Folk barrel-organs, instrumental predecessors of modern computers.
