The article presents the inventory of the Ethnology Department’s museum collections at the Gorenjska Museum in Kranj as the fi rst step in the preparation of an object catalogue. Such museum documentation helps us in researching and learning about the collected cultural heritage, which derives from the former ways of living in the province of Gorenjska. The most important issue in such an inventory is how to classify museum objects into the individual groups of the Slovene ethnological classifi cation system. The author introduces the reader to the dilemmas and solutions in this activity. She draws attention to the diffi culties connected with indexing in computerised databases, because the discipline has no terminology thesaurus.
