Revealed dimensions of everyday hospital practices

The article deals with a segment of the hospital experiences of patients at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Clinical Centre Ljubljana, and reveals some of the patients’ feelings when faced with disease. The article discusses biomedicine in an urban environment. Though biomedicine is by definition a natural science and technical activity, the discipline is also a social science. The modern method of scientific biomedical interpretation identifies and treats “pathological facts” in accordance with the manifestation of symptoms in the body; this means that it deals with the body’s space. But a disease does not take place only in the body, but also in a certain time and space, and especially in close connection with the life experiences of the patient and his family.
