Intangible cultural heritage of Slovenia

The permanent exhibition on intangible cultural heritage at the Slovene Ethnographic Museum presents a rich treasure trove of practices, presentations, expressions, knowledge and skills that are inscribed in the national Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

It is designed as a bilingual (Slovenian-English) exhibition with interactive elements. It is divided into five parts, representing five domains of intangible cultural heritage:

  • oral tradition, expressions and language,
  • performing arts,
  • social practices, rituals and festive events,
  • traditional craftmanship,
  • knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe.

Visitors can obtain basic information on the systemic safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage at national level and the registration of intangible cultural heritage units in the Register.

The content part, which represents the domain of performing arts, has been supplemented with interactive content that invites visitors to learn the dances sotiš and šamarjanka.

In 2025, the exhibition on the intangible cultural heritage of Slovenia was supplemented by a presentation of the units inscribed in the Register, which will be regularly updated with new entries. Visitors will be able to get to know Slovenia's intangible cultural heritage by browsing through the units classified by domain in an interactive projection, which will provide them with basic information about the heritage.

The exhibition is designed in such a way that it brings the dimension of the intangible to the space in which it is located, through the graphic design, but at the same time it allows for the possibilities of presenting tangible cultural heritage connected and deepening and complementing the content related to individual domains of heritage. The exhibition space has become a venue for various events (e.g. dance workshops) and will continue to serve as a meeting place for the intangible cultural heritage of Slovenia.

The Slovene Ethnographic Museum, as the Coordinator for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, is aware of the importance of promoting intangible cultural heritage, which is inscribed in the Register of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, thus contributing to the safeguarding of heritage and the dissemination of its meaning and knowledge among a diverse audience - both among its bearers and all those who are interested in this area of heritage from a professional or purely amateur point of view. The exhibition on the intangible cultural heritage of Slovenia is on display in the SEM exhibition house with the aim of raising awareness among museum visitors about the role of the SEM as the Coordinator in the framework of safeguarding intangible cultural heritage as set out in the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003), as well as presenting the intangible cultural heritage that is inscribed in the Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
