Do you recognize these African masks?
Dr Boris Kuhar (1929–2018), the director of the Slovene Ethnographic Museum (1963–1987), made films during field-research in Slovenia and on his trips to Africa.
He was familiar with film production as he had previously been employed by Television Ljubljana. After his death, his daughter Mateja Logar handed over to the museum his valuable archive, in which we also discovered a short film on African masks.
The research has shown that the masks are neither from the collection of SEM, nor from the Foit collection of the Velenje Museum, nor from the collection of Franc Tretjak of the Carinthian Regional Museum. We would like to find out their origin – Boris Kuhar may have filmed the masks in one of African or European museums, or documented them in a monograph on African masks.
If you recognize them, please contact the Curator of Ethnographic Film in SEM, Nadja Valentinčič Furlan nadja.valentincic@etno-muzej.si.
