Film dopolnjuje občasno razstavo Slovenskega etnografskega muzeja Tanzanija: Med senco kolonializma in sodobnimi pogledi (2026).

Tanzanian anthropologist, curator  and artist Eliabu Mbonimpa researched the locations in Tanzania where Slovenian Stanko Grom lived and worked between 1937 and 1962, during the period of German and British colonies of Tanganyika. He took 4,000 photographs, which his descendants, together with the material heritage, handed over to the Slovenian Ethnographic Museum. Eliabu Mbonimpa and his interlocutors draw attention to the traces of colonial exploitation in Tanzania and he expresses the desire that the exhibition visits Tanzania in the fiture. The film complements the temporary exhibition of the Slovene Ethnographic Museum Tanzania: Between the Shadow of Colonialism and Contemporary Perspectives (2026).

Tools for Responding to Floods: Vulnerability, Health and Solidarity

In this article we analyse tools designed for preparedness and response to various crises and natural disasters. The analysis was carried out as part of the international Sonar-Cities project, and helped to identify the characteristics of similar tools in various European countries. In this text, we analyse Slovenian tools for responding to floods and other disasters. Among other things, we break down how the tools address vulnerabilities in the context of the health consequences of disasters and to what extent they promote solidarity and mutual assistance in Ljubljana neighbourhoods.

The Responses of European Museums and Galleries to the Refugee Crisis

Migration is one of the constants of humanity, and this is something we have long been aware of in Slovenia, too, given that this has always been a country of transit. Migration is largely an urban phenomenon, which is why museums in urban environments play a key role in raising public awareness of the historical and contemporary perspectives of immigration policy and culture.

The Countless Shades of Solidarity in an Anthropological Perspective

Solidarity is the foundation of biosociality. The article highlights its anthropological roots in a unified humanity, but shows only a few examples of mutual activities, especially in connection with music, and presents the foundations of solidarity as a key result of the establishment of kinship systems. The basic thesis of the article is that solidarity is an anthropological constant, which is especially evident from a modern biocultural evolutionary perspective, as solidarity was a key evolutionary advantage of humanity and its predecessors.

Tracing Colonialism: Tanzanian Collection in Slovenia

In early 2025, the Slovene Ethnographic Museum (SEM) acquired a significant collection of artifacts and photographs from Tanzania. These were collected by Stanko Grom, who lived and worked at various locations across Tanzania in the mid-20th century. Grom arrived in the country as early as 1937, working first on a sisal plantation near Tabora, then at a lead mine in Mpanda, and later in the construction industry in Chunya. Upon his return home in the 1960s, he brought with him more than 4,000 photographs and approximately 150 objects.
