New element inscribed in the Register – Distilling (Žganjekuha)

At the proposal of the Slovene Ethnographic Museum/Coordinator for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Ministry of Culture has inscribed the 134th element called Distilling (Žganjekuha) into the Register of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Distilling is the process of producing natural brandy by fermenting and distilling various varieties of fruit or grape pomace, berries, herbs, etc. The activity is known throughout Slovenia, differing in local ingredients and recipes. Special equipment is required for the distilling, the most important of which is a cauldron.

Several bearers were identified next to the unit, which will not be registered in the Register.

The initiative to enter this element of the intangible cultural heritage in the Register was addressed to the Coordinator by Matjaž Pikl and Nastja Ivanuša as representative of the Association of Lovers of Homemade Distilling.

There are currently 134 elements and 401 bearers of intangible cultural heritage inscribed in the Register. The next deadline for submitting initiatives for entry in the Register is September 15, 2025.
