Between death on a plate and a warden's love (On bird-catching in the Brda region)
The study Between death on a plate and a warden's love (on bird-catchins in the Brda region) starts by mentioning the two basic purposes of catching-birds referred to in the title - to eat them or to keep the feathered singers in cages. It ends with an analysis of the reality of both. In the body of the text the author defines the basic concepts of bird-catching in Slovenia and points out its main characteristics. |

A come-back of the shepherds?
The article "A Come-back of the Shepherds?" is an unusual epilogue to the author's book (published 1989) on sheepfarming and transhurtumce in the Pivka region from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century. The author observed the everyday life of present-day sheepmasters for some months in 1990, and the article presents her comparative findings on the economic and cultural changes in sheep-farming in the Pivka region as well as her reflections on its future.
|

The sound of words, the voice of sounds
A farmer's daily life was tightly interwoven with that of his oxen. Mutual communication was indispensable to a harmonious working companionship and in it all the senses played their role: the taste, the smell, the touch and the sense of hearing. The paper focuses on the latter, dealing with the sound of words – the intangible tool of human voice – calling the oxen by their names, giving commands and singing songs; it also deals with two other sounds applied in communicating with oxen – the voice of human whistling and the sound of cracking of a whip. |

Etnološki krotilec zverinic
This article about the life and work of the Slovene folklorist and ethnologist, academician Dr. Milko Matičetov, attempts to be a rich lunch. Its aperitif is the introduction which provides the reader with the existing texts on Matičetov in Slovene folklorist and ethnological professional circles. The enticing starter is quite a surprise, a story about »Matičetov and his first encounter with France«. The main course, the chapter »About Matičetov as a person and researcher«, is enriched with two side-dishes, subchapters entitled »Alpes Orientales« and »Resia«. |

Od postelje do pokopališča
The author tackles the subject of the generally only marginally treated transport of the deceased, the issues related to the physical transport from the dwellings of this world to those of the other world. The article's more general introductory part summarises a range of written information on how the deceased were carried or driven in Slovenia. After that follows the case story of a hearse from Smlednik near Ljubljana and of its driver. Finally it presents reflections of people's attitude toward death.
|
